Carrousel French Bistro Restaurant
After more than 10 years on Raanana's Rambam Street, Carrousel Restaurant has moved to Zarchin Street in the city's Etgarim Tech park. Chef and owner Stephan remains at the helm. The menu is the same delicious French menu that is Stephan's specialty. And as in the original location, the concept of the small restaurant where everyone gets individual attention, continues.
Chef and restaurant owner Stephan has a thing for small restaurants. With room for just 20 seats in the new restaurant, he can give each diner personal attention. Carrousel, in its new location, is not much bigger than the restaurant on Rambam Street. It is certainly newer, more attractive, and more comfortable, while retaining the quaint atmosphere of the original restaurant.
So why the move?
The kitchen on Zarchin Street is roomier. There is convenient street parking in the evening, and i believe that there is more space between tables. The restaurant is set back off the street, with room for several tables outside under the awning.
Carrousel Restaurant, reinvented, is a good improvement and warrants a visit.
Carrousel is a European style restaurant with a simple and comfortable decor. As in French restaurants, the dining event is all about the food and not about the atmosphere. The decor is kept simple, so as not to compete with the food. The tables are covered in white cloth and glass-topped. wooden
bistro chairs. We were charmed by the grey and maroon color pallet of the restaurant, the mirrors - a favorite in French restaurants, the French music, and the collection of carrousel figurines at the entrance. Stephan's diploma from the French cooking school L'ecole Drouant is
All the foods at this restaurant from the bread to the desserts, are made in house. This is part of the personal touch at this restaurant. Not only does Stephan handle the cooking, he also prances about the restaurant in his white chef's coat taking orders and interacting with the diners.
The Carrousel menu offers a nice range of dishes. While you are reviewing the menu, in Hebrew, English and French - what else - munch on a dish of sliced carrots and cucumbers served with a piquant dip.
We started our meal with one of the savory crepes. The nicely presented crêpe was filled with cheese and sweet potato, and was served with a green salad. This was a nice start to the meal. My companion could not resist the fish soup, and Stephan generously gave him a tasting. The soup was served with a miniature bowl of croutons. The porcelain set of matching soup and crouton bowl was so charming it was worthy of mention,
Along with the first course Stephan brought out his signature brioche with a pad of butter. Brown and crusty
on the outside and soft in the inside, these cup cake shaped rolls are
so good they are a dish on to themselves.
Stephan's rolls have no competition.

My companion and I like to choose different style dishes, to get a taste of the restaurant repertoire. For our main courses, we chose one of the many fish dishes and the lasagna. Carrousel offers a large selection of fish dishes. We chose the salmon, grilled with lemon sauce. The platter was served with rice, sweet potato cream, and an eggplant dish. Portions of the different side dishes were modest, but the entire dish was very filling. The lasagna was an individual portion, baked in the serving dish. This is classic lasagna with layers of eggplant and dough. I found it very tasty and filling as well. The salad balanced it out nicely.
The menu offers many other choices.
There are pasta dishes with cheese or tomato sauces. Risotto. Served in a large bowl
these dishes are more than ample for one diner. What's a French restaurant without fondue? Actually, says Stephan, Fondue
is originally a Swiss dish. The French adopted it in two versions: cheese
and chocolate. Enjoy Carrousel's outstanding cheese fondue, with 200
grams of melted cheeses bubbling in a heavy pot placed on your table
over a small flame. Dinner becomes a party when you and your friends
dip chunks of bread into this rich delicious mix. This is a great dish,
unique at Carrousel, for 3 - 4 friends dining together.
Who can resist Stephan's rich and delicious dairy desserts. These sweets are all made in house including the ice cream . We chose the crepe suzette, served in the classic French style, with a scoop of ice cream and orange sauce. We also enjoyed the chocolate parfait made with rich chocolate and no fats or sugar added. It was so delicious it was hard to believe.
The creme brulee is recommended - for the next time..
Stephan also hosts cooking classes and cooking events such as fund raisers and Bat Mitzva parties, with a cooking theme. Stephan welcomes groups (reservations in advance) who would like some hands-on fun in the kitchen. Contact the restaurant for details.
The demand at the
restaurant makes reservations a must. Stephan will not seat you if your
table is reserved and he spaces his customers with enough time for each
wave to enjoy their dinner.

Submitted by: Anne & David Silverman Date: August 11, 2015. Description: It has been 10 years since we last sent in a review of Carrousel and it is hard to believe that over all these years that we have been going there regularly, the standard and quality of the food and service have never dropped.
This dairy fish restaurant always serves exceptional food and the owner/chef Stefan has his finger on the pulse of everything. All the food is prepared "on site"; amazing "hot" soup, great fish and pasta, and no bought-in desserts here, just scrumptious home creations. We have never had a bad meal and all the friends we have ever brought, have like us, put Carrousel on their "restaurant map". Join the club !!
Submitted by: D. Silverman. Date: August 2005. Description: Since writing in about Carrousel back in January 2004 we have become regulars (even though we live in Netanya), and each time it is as good there as the time before. The standard of food and service never drops and one can be assured of a most delightful evening on each occasion. The food is still exemplary, and always comes hot(unless it shouldn't be!!). The soups are wonderful, the main dishes both creative and exceptionally tasty, and the desserts are to die for!!! For a special meal at a very reasonable cost, book now!!!!

Description: Hi List, I ate at Carousel Restaurant here in Ra'anana this evening for the first time and wanted to report to all of you that
the food is excellent, delicious, unpretentious, beautifully prepared and
very tasty too!!! They are also child friendly and Kosher ( a wicked combination, right?) Highly, highly recommended - I'll definately go back for more.
Ruth: I want to second it - I had lunch with my friends several times and every time the food was fresh and very tasty - go and try and you'll never regret. It is on Rambam street (close to Ahuza) on the west side.
Submitted by:Yossi D. (Raanana list) Date: January 1, 2004. Description: We finally have it in Raanana. I was surprised a few days ago when I walked in Rambam street in Raanana to find a new restaurant. Surprised because it is the same as the small gourmet restaurants you see in Paris, that you find where you wouldn't expect. The restaurant is owned by a couple, Stephan and Valerie who are really nice people which add to the wonderful and warm atmosphere. Stephan is a chef and he makes amazing food and amazing dishes and the prices are reasonable. Did I use too many "amazing"s? Believe me that this is what I feel. The proof is that I've been there twice in the last days. I really really recommend it, and yes it is diary and kosher.

The food was delicious, and chef Stephan, acting as waiter as well, was so pleasant to deal with. He was patient with his explanations of the menu (and extra daily specials), and at no time were we rushed to finish our meal.
Submitted by:Larry L. (Raanana list) Date: January 13, 2004. Description: After reading on this list some excellent reviews of the Carrousel bistro on Rambam in Ra'anana, we went there this evening with friends. All 4 of us had an excellent dinner and will return again soon.
When you go there are two important things to remember:
1. Very small...make a reservation and 2. Save room for dessert.
